### When was barbecue invented?
The history of this succulent sauce is believed to go back as far as the 1800’s with the Native American tribes of the South and East.  **Brazil:** One of the most popular styles of barbecue from the southern region of Brazil is called churrascaria. Large chunks of meat are slow cooked rotisserie-style and usually served on metal skewers resembling a sword. Much like its American counterpart, this form of cooking was heavy influenced by Brazil’s cowboy or gaucho culture.

 **Japan: ** While there isn’t an absence of beef, pork, or chicken on this island nation, sea food usually takes center stage. Japan’s version of barbecue is dominated by grilling bite-sized chunks over direct heat instead of smoking large cuts of meat as prepared in more western styles. In some restaurants, the grilling is done by the customer right at their table, insuring everything is to their liking.

 **Canada:** America’s neighbor to the north has carved out their own lane on Barbecue Road. While Canadian barbecue does have similarities, some key differences are plain and obvious. For example, instead of using brown sugar to bring out a subtly sweet and smoky flavor, maple syrup is used instead. This native ingredient levels out some of the overpowering tang that exists in some sauces.

 August is National Sandwich Month, and this has got us thinking, what is and where did the sandwich come from?

The history of what we call a sandwich goes back to the 1700s with John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, from which the name is derived. While playing cards one night, he became hungry and didn’t want to leave the playing table to avoid losing what we think was a hot hand. To satisfy his hunger, he asked for a serving of roast beef to be put between two slices of bread to eat with his hands–thus the “sandwich” was born.

 The idea of meat between bread became a classic staple all around the world.
