KENOSHA -- "This has definitely kind of turned people's world upside down right now," Bill Zimmerman said. He's the owner of Dickey's Barbecue Pit in Kenosha and he knows there's nothing like a hearty meal during the coronavirus pandemic, a time with many unknowns.
"It's comfort food," Zimmerman said. "It's the real deal. It's a meat and potatoes meal."
Dickey's is finding ways to support the community, one brisket at a time.
"A lot of those people are working long days," said Zimmerman. "They don't want to cook. They don't have time to cook!" The restaurant's dining room was a little different Sunday, April 5 due to COVID-19. "Sundays, we normally have a dining room full of people," said Zimmerman. Every Sunday, Dickey's Barbecue Pit offers free kids' meals. &nbsp;That deal -- along with several other specials -- moved online due to COVID-19.
"I think people are trying to follow the guidelines and be safer at home," he said. While Zimmerman noted an increase in online orders, more people are doing things with their families -- therefore, buying bigger quantities of food. "People, in general, are buying in bulk, buying meats by the pound," he said. It's something Zimmerman said was also helping the business, with people supporting the places that are open.
The online specials will go until April 30, but that could change depending on the coronavirus restrictions.

Before the coronavirus pandemic took hold, families were already increasingly turning to restaurants for convenient, affordable solutions to put dinner on the table. Now that the whole family is at home 24/7 for the foreseeable future, savvy restaurant operators are pivoting, leaning into and rolling out creative at-home meal and entertainment solutions for kids and families.
“It’s a huge shift and huge stress for parents,” said Laura Rea Dickey, CEO of Dallas, Texas-based Dickey’s Barbecue Pit.
To alleviate some of that stress, the 520-unit barbecue chain has made a shift of its own, moving its decades-long tradition of kids eating free in its dining rooms to online.
“As we come into these challenging times, [we asked] how do we meet our key values?” said Dickey. “What would help as everyone is upended that extends the concept?
A chopped brisket slider with a side of mac and cheese is among the kids-eat free deals offered online (usually dine-in only) from Dickey’s Barbecue Pit.
In addition to kids eating free, Dickey’s has extended its 2 for $24 meal deal through April, launched new Family Packs (choice of two meats, three sides, plus rolls and sauce) online for a price of $34.99, and is offering whole meats by the pound and whole cuts of meat that can be broken down at home for consumption at a later date.
The message, said Dickey, is “we’re here, we’re open, let us serve you.”

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit Supports First Responders at Dallas Library

The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting all of us. It is hitting our homeless neighbors very hard. As services are limited and donations are down, many shelters and non-profits are having to get by with far less than normal.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Dickey’s Barbecue is thanking first responders by offering 25 percent off their to-go meals.
All first responders in uniform — including police officers, firefighters, emergency response teams and medical professionals — are encouraged to stop by the Dickey’s Bakersfield location on 3505 Coffee Road for 25 percent off their meal.
“We want to show our appreciation to the brave men and women who are serving our community during this difficult time,” said Owner/Operator Shana Braly.

Dickey’s Barbecue Offers 25% Off for First Responders

Snohomish County restaurant owners have faced one challenge after another during the coronavirus shutdown.
Gov. Jay Inslee restricted bars and restaurants to takeout, drive-thru and delivery services to slow the spread of COVID-19. Sit-down dining is prohibited through at least April 6, following Inslee’s stay-at-home order Monday.
Adapting to the restrictions was easy enough for Chad Manivanh, owner of Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Everett. His drive-thru, along with partnerships with Uber Eats and DoorDash, made the transition relatively seamless. He also offers curbside pickup and contact-less delivery.
But the quickly changing nature of the crisis hasn’t given him enough time to consider whether third-party delivery is worth the cost. Manivanh, of Lynnwood, said the online ordering platforms’ fees are eating up his profits.
“At the end of the week, we’ll analyze the data to see if it’s worth continuing or if it would be better to shut our doors,” Manivanh said. “Just by having third-party delivery, it’s not enough to cover our costs.”
Manivanh said Dickey’s has lost customers who work at Boeing, 5 miles to the north. In an attempt to compensate, Dickey’s has cut some menu prices — the pulled pork sandwich, formerly $6.95, is now $3. Also, kids eat free on Sunday.
He said the only thing keeping them in business is the community’s support.
“That has been a blessing for us,” he said. “They want to see us stay open.”
