IN THE NEWS

ABC 36 in Kentucky featured Dickey's in a segment focusing on our delicious menu items.

Meteorologist Eric Burke heads over to Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, for a deep dip into the restaurants delicious barbecue delights!

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is a true American success story. In 1941, Travis Dickey, a World War I veteran, opened the first Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Dallas, Texas. Dickey was a true Texas character blessed with the gift of gab and the love of authentic, slow-smoked barbecue. In the beginning, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit was truly a family operation with Travis working the block and Miss Ollie Dickey serving sandwiches. Space on the restaurant sign was rented out to help pay the start-up costs for the restaurant and the menu was limited to beef brisket, pit hams, barbecue beans, potato chips, beer, bottled milk and sodas.

Brothers Roland and T.D. Dickey took over the business in 1967, continuing their father’s legacy of quality, hickory smoked signature meats. Under the direction of the Dickey brothers, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit expanded throughout the Dallas Fort Worth area and quickly became known throughout Texas for mouthwatering hickory-smoked barbecue, popular catered events and the iconic Big Yellow Cups. Franchising began in 1994 after loyal guests and barbecue fanatics demanded more locations. Today with over 530 locations in 43 states, loyal guests are what keep Dickey’s thriving in every community.

The brand has come a long way from Travis Dickey’s first location. But, some things never change. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit still slow smokes all meats on-site just the same way they did in 1941. The menu features beef brisket, pulled pork, St. Louis style ribs, polish sausage, spicy cheddar sausage, smoked turkey, and marinated chicken, with an extensive array of homestyle sides from jalapeño beans to macaroni and cheese. Buttery rolls are served with every meal along with complimentary ice cream. And just like always, kids eat free on Sunday.

Roland Dickey, Jr. became Chief Executive Officer in 2006 continuing the family tradition. As the fast casual chain racks up recognition, the Dickey family still serves up the same quality barbecue recipes handed down for generations coupled with the same brand of southern hospitality, only on a much larger scale.

Dickey's Barbecue Pit Featured on WTVQ ABC 36 for Delicious BBQ

Franchising.com covered Dickey's Valentine's Day promotion of Kids Eat Free.
Dallas, TX - A recent study found that 60 percent of Americans that celebrate Valentine’s Day include their entire families in the celebration. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit Owner/Operator Muhammed Afzal will offer Kids Eat Free this Valentine’s Day to help those families celebrate with great food at a reasonable price.

Afzal, one of Dickey’s original franchisees, is now the proud owner of five Dickey’s locations across the north Texas area, acquiring his fifth location in Plano, TX in 2015. Operating these five locations over the years, Afzal has learned that family comes first to his guests.

“In my 22 years with Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, I have met and worked with a diverse group of Owner/Operators all with different stories and backgrounds,” says Afzal. “The one thing that brings us all together is that we have a passion for pit-smoked barbecue and serving our guests and their families.”

Dickey’s has nearly 600 franchised locations nationwide and considers their barbecue business model as family working with family to serve families. Still family-owned and operated, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is proud to count their two original franchisees among their growing brand 22 years after Dale Smith and ‘Mo’ Afzal opened their first locations. Since 1994 the Afzal and Smith families have had a healthy family rivalry between the two which will continue this Valentine’s Day to see who will host the most families for their pit-smoked family meal.

“At Dickey’s, we constantly try to evolve to better ourselves while staying true to our barbecue and family roots,” says Laura Rea Dickey, CEO of Dickey’s Barbecue Restaurants, Inc. “This Valentine’s Day, Dickey’s hopes folks will see barbecue as the best way to their favorite peoples’ hearts.”

Dickey's prepares for the big game

The Dothan Eagle published this review of the Dickey's Barbecue Pit location in Dothan.
Many know a plethora of restaurants find a home in Dothan, but a disparity exists between which sides of the city you can find them.

Eateries – as well as neighborhoods and stores – are more densely concentrated on the northern and western sides of town. That means people like me who live on the southern and eastern sides often have to travel 10 to 20 minutes (in heavy traffic) to dine at our favorite spots.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, located near Southeast Alabama Medical Center, could change that after three friends and I had a pleasurable experience there recently.

Food

I met my friends Bryan, Ryan and Meredith after church one Sunday since all four of us either live or attend church on that side of Dothan. Ryan has visited the establishment before, while Bryan, Meredith and I were newcomers.

Dickey’s offers several different options, from sandwiches to plates to barbecue baked potatoes. Ryan immediately ordered a half-pound of smoked chicken ($6.48) and a half-pound of jalapeno cheddar sausage ($4.95).

I followed with an intriguing order – The Westerner ($6.49) – a beef brisket sandwich topped with a Polish kielbasa and cheddar. I paired it with a side of baked potato casserole ($2.25) and a large sweet tea ($2.50).

Bryan noted he was not extremely hungry, so he opted for the Beefy Mac ($6.99) and a small drink ($1.50).

Meredith ordered the giant baker ($7.95), a barbecue baked potato that she topped with pulled pork. The baked potato usually comes with cheddar, sour cream and green onions, but Meredith asked for those items to be removed.

Ryan thought the smoked chicken provided good flavor, especially with the hint of Italian seasoning. The breast was lean and juicy but could have used more smokiness, he said.

Ryan absolutely adored the jalapeno and cheese sausage, though.

The entrée possessed the right balance of peppers, cheese and meat with each element complementing the other. He added the sausage was smoked to perfection, and after sampling a bit, I can concur.

While it sounds like an odd combination, the brisket and kielbasa on my sandwich worked well. The melted cheddar really melded the sandwich together, and by the time I added a touch of Dickey’s spicy barbecue sauce on top, I had an awesome sandwich.

I also highly recommend the baked potato casserole, which had a heart-warming and creamy blend of potato and cheese.

The elements of Bryan’s Beefy Mac dish, by themselves, were very good, he said. He noted the macaroni and cheese contained rich flavor and had great consistency, and a sweet barbecue sauce he added to the brisket really accentuated the meat.

However, the dish comes to the customer with a pile of brisket resting on top of the macaroni and cheese. Bryan said the brisket dominated the dish in this format, which is why he separated the two elements.

Meredith had no qualms with her selection. She noted she did not have to add salt to her potato, and the pulled pork mixed perfectly with the potato.

She added the sweet barbecue sauce was the best she has eaten in awhile – not overpowering with the right proportion of kick. In a show of how different palates can be, Ryan disapproved of the sweet sauce while noting the original sauce had a great blend of spices. On the other hand, the spicy was my favorite, although it is not for the faint of heart.

Rating: 3.5 stars, good to great

Service

Since Meredith had never been to Dickey’s, she found the ordering system a bit confusing, and I agree. You actually place your order with the people cutting the meats on one side of the lunch counter then pay at the cash register at the other end.

The format is common to sandwich shops and a certain higher-end quick-service Tex-Mex chain, but I have only seen it once (in Texas) at a barbecue restaurant. Some signage would improve this aspect.

Other than that, the food was promptly served and the staff courteous. There is not too much interaction given it is a lunch-counter style establishment.

Rating: 3.5 stars, good to great

Atmosphere

The aged-wood motif fits the cuisine you would expect a Southern-style barbecue restaurant to possess. Some of the walls are built to resemble a blackboard, and drawings fitting for a barbecue place adorn them.

Although the lighting can be a bit low for some people’s taste, I had no issues with it. The layout communicates a proper theme for the cuisine.

Rating: 3 stars, good

Dickey's Shines on Dothan's East Side

Lehigh Valley Live published this article about the new Dickey's location planned to open in Palmer Township, PA.
Dickey's Barbecue Pit is bouncing back in the Easton area.

A new location is expected to open in early March at the 25th Street Shopping Center in Palmer Township.

Just a few miles away, the Dickey's at Park Plaza in Forks Township closed recently after less than two years of operation. Dickey's also has Lehigh Valley locations in Bethlehem and Lower Macungie Township.

Dickey's is taking over the free-standing building in the 25th Street Shopping Center that previously housed Muscle Maker Grill, and Pizza Hut before that. Workers have lately been renovating the inside of the building and installing signs.

The national barbecue chain overhauled its concept last year to appeal to millennials, and the Palmer location will reflect the new style with hardwood-style floors, chalkboard walls and plaid button-up uniforms, a Dickey's spokeswoman said. The restaurants' kitchens are now smaller to accommodate more seating: Palmer will have about 75 seats.

It's not confirmed yet whether the new Dickey's will offer free soft-serve ice cream, as some other locations do. But there will be free Wi-Fi, and Dickey's usual array of barbecued meat, smoked daily on-site. Expanded menu items include "barbecue in a bowl" options like mac and cheese with brisket, sliders and tacos.

The owner of the new Palmer Township location is Ken Lynch, who has owned a Dickey's in Stroudsburg since 2013 and wasn't involved in the closed Forks Township location. A Dickey's spokeswoman said that the company is excited for Lynch to replicate his success when the Palmer Township location opens.

A new restaurant is about to fire up the Palmer dining scene

Adobó Latin Kitchen is from the same team behind the popular Pints & Pies pub.

Leading up to the opening, Dickey's will hold special promotions including giveaways of a year of free barbecue for three guests, live music and 50 percent off orders for uniformed first responders for the first four Fridays.

The 25th Street Shopping Center has been on a run of new restaurant announcements lately. A Wing Stop is now open in a corner location, and last week Adobo Latin Kitchen announced that it would start serving Puerto Rican cuisine in February.

The community continues to rally and show support for fallen State Trooper Landon Weaver and his family.

Dickey's Barbecue will be holding a fundraiser Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Dickey's Corporate has announced that they will match tomorrow's total donation.

Four restaurants in Texas will be donating 10 percent of their sales, too.

The fundraiser will be the first ever match donation corporate has ever done.

The 'Because We Care' Foundation will also be selling Trooper Weaver memorial t-shirts.

Dickey's holding fundraiser for Tpr. Weaver family

The Altoona Mirror covered the fundraiser for fallen Pennsylvania State Trooper.
Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in downtown Altoona will hold a fundraising event Saturday for the family of fallen Trooper Landon Weaver.

“Twenty percent of sales will go to Macy, the wife of Trooper Landon Weaver. We are also selling T-shirts with 100 percent of proceeds going to the Because We Care Foundation,” said Manager Stephanie Trude of Dickey’s at 1211 11th St.

The fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Trooper Weaver was killed in the line of duty in Huntingdon County on Dec. 30.

Meanwhile, four Dickey’s locations in the Dallas, Texas, area — where Dickey’s is based — are raising funds for the Weaver family.

This fundraiser is the first in the Dickey’s donation matching program, intended to increase impact for individual fallen officers’ families in their time of need. Wherever Dickey’s operates, the barbecue brand said they hope to provide support for first responders.

“Dickey’s is proud to serve those who protect us,” Dickey’s CEO Laura Rea Dickey said in a statement. “We hope to provide support and relief to the Weaver family. While we wish tragedies like this never happen, we want to do what we can to help the Weavers and other families who may face these circumstances in the future.”

Super Bowl with Dickey’s

Dickey's was ranked ninth on Franchise Times Fast & Serious List 2017.
9. Dickey’s Barbecue PitBarbecue restaurants Dickey’s CEO Roland Dickey Jr. has a strong personal style—energetic, sharp-tongued and confident that he’s helping to build “the greatest brand ever.” Contrary to his brash ways, he’s unwilling to pat himself on the back or take a victory lap for fear of losing the brand’s momentum. As last year’s No. 6 Fast & Serious brand, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit remains firmly on the gas with a new butcher shop motif and a heavy investment in technology, including data analytics, loyalty, delivery and a new point of sale system. Like Domino’s has been, Dickey wants his brand to be known for its technological know-how in the coming years. Dickey’s has morphed into a more fast-casual-style brand, focused on improving its carbon footprint and steadily removing less desirable ingredients from its food. “People want to know the origins of the ingredients, and want to know it’s high quality,” Dickey said. “Our philosophy is, we don’t want to serve what we think people want, we want to serve what we like and what we want—and fortunately a lot of people agree with us.” After working on beefing up its internal infrastructure, he added 2017 is the year Dickey’s goes international, which should impact its future growth in a big way. “We don’t want to do anything to scratch our ego, so we wanted to lay a really solid foundation domestically,” he said. “We have all kinds of interest, especially from Central and South America and Asia—people are blowing us up.” Within the U.S. or abroad, Dickey has a razor-sharp focus on keeping the brand fresh on a successive basis, while simultaneously appealing to its “legacy” and younger customers. “This isn’t your grandfather’s barbecue,” he said. “All generations want to be part of something cool and happening and fun and growing.”
